The reputable children's hospital, ranked No. 3 in the country, has been expanding its reach in Central Texas since 2018, with urgent and specialty care clinics, and even purchasing pediatric offices. Their latest venture is a $485 million, state-of-the-art hospital in North Austin, expected to employ 1,100 people.
However, the harsh reality of our flawed capitalist system has caught up with them. Due to a two-week delay in the opening of the new hospital and lower patient volumes, the hospital is now facing a $200 million income loss. As a result, they have had to resort to heartless cost-cutting measures that hurt working people.
Texas Children's Hospital refused to provide details on the number of layoffs in the Austin area or the types of positions affected, showing a blatant disregard for transparency and the well-being of their employees.
This is yet another example of corporate greed and the failings of for-profit healthcare. We must demand better for our communities and the dedicated healthcare workers who are being treated as dispensable.
