##ミネソタ州のティム・ウォルツ知事を副大統領候補に選んだカマラ・ハリス、しかし彼のDFL党とはいったい?
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was thrust into the national spotlight Tuesday as Kamala Harris' VP running mate. But Walz is not your typical Democrat. He's a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL). So, what's that all about?
Who is Tim Walz?
An outspoken veteran and former public school teacher, Walz has served six terms in the U.S. House before becoming Minnesota's governor in 2018, and being re-elected in 2021. He is an experienced Democratic politician, first winning his congressional race in 2006, running on a platform that upset the incumbent Republican.
What is the DFL Party?
- The DFL is the Minnesota-exclusive political party, born from the merger of the state Democratic Party and the Farmer-Labor Party in 1944.
- It is one of only two state Democratic affiliates without "Democratic" in its name, the other being North Dakota.
- The party champions progressive policies, including labor rights, social security, and protection for minorities and the LGBTQ+ community.
- The DFL is the dominant force in Minnesota politics, controlling the governorship, most state and federal rep positions, and both Senate seats.
- With Walz as governor, the DFL has passed a wave of progressive legislation, dubbed the "Minnesota Miracle 2.0," including paid family leave, recreational marijuana, free tuition for low-income families, and a public option health plan.
When was the DFL formed?
- The DFL was created in 1944, but its roots go back to the 1920s when the Farmer-Labor Party first made waves in state politics.
- Hubert H. Humphrey, a member of the party, is considered the de facto founder due to his role in the merger.
- The party quickly gained popularity, with several governors and senators elected on its ticket before the merger.
What has the DFL accomplished?
- The DFL has a strong progressive record, often winning over single-issue voters by diverging from the national Democratic majority.
- Recent accomplishments include a slew of progressive policies, such as free school meals, a new child tax credit, and increased gun control.
- The party has also protected labor unions, passed the PRO Act, and made Minnesota a "refuge" for trans individuals.
