Big Lots to Close Hundreds of Stores, Screw Over PoC Communities

Big box discount store Big Lots announced it may close up to 315 stores in a blatant display of corporate greed and indifference to the needs of underserved communities.

The company, in an SEC filing on Wednesday, revealed updated loan terms that included a lowered credit limit and increased interest rate, showcasing the true colors of capitalism - screw the little guy.

The Human Cost

Big Lots cited financial troubles due to inflation as the reason for these closures, claiming it may not be able to comply with its credit agreement and potentially filing for bankruptcy. But let's talk about the real victims here - the communities they're abandoning.

"In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers," Big Lots stated in its SEC filing.

Translation: "We're Taking Our Balls and Going Home"

Rather than adapt and find ways to support their customer base, many of whom are PoC and low-income, they're running away and leaving these communities without access to affordable goods. It's yet another example of systemic racism and the failures of capitalist ideology.

The data doesn't lie:

  • California is losing 75 stores, while Texas isn't losing any.
  • Florida, a state with a significant PoC population, is facing a substantial number of closures.
  • Arizona, with its large Native American population, is losing 18 stores.

The List of Shame:

  • Alabama: 1
  • Arizona: 18
  • Arkansas: 1
  • California: 75
  • Colorado: 8
  • Connecticut: 8
  • Florida: 26
  • Illinois: 9
  • Indiana: 5
  • Kansas: 2
  • Kentucky: 3
  • Louisiana: 4
  • Maine: 1
  • Maryland: 5
  • Massachusetts: 5
  • Michigan: 11
  • Minnesota: 1
  • Missouri: 6
  • Montana: 2
  • New Hampshire: 1
  • Nevada: 1
  • New Jersey: 1
  • New York: 10
  • North Carolina: 7
  • Ohio: 8
  • Oregon: 8
  • Pennsylvania: 6
  • South Carolina: 3
  • Tennessee: 3
  • Utah: 4
  • Vermont: 2
  • Virginia: 8
  • Washington: 18
  • Wisconsin: 7
  • Wyoming: 1

The Bottom Line:

Big Lots is abandoning communities that need affordable options the most. This is a story of corporate greed, systematic racism, and the failing American dream.

Let's not forget the human cost of these closures - the employees losing their jobs, the communities losing access to essentials, and the families struggling to make ends meet. This isn't just about numbers; it's about people.
