Cash App Caves, Pays Up For Privacy Injustice

The mobile payment service, Cash App, has finally been held accountable for its blatant disregard for user privacy, agreeing to a $15 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit. This meager sum is a result of the app's shameful data breach in 2021, which exposed the personal information of millions of its users.

According to the USA TODAY report, the plaintiffs dragged Cash App Investing and Block Inc. to court, calling out their "failure to exercise reasonable care in securing and safeguarding consumer information." The lawsuit cited the December 2021 data breach, where a former employee accessed and downloaded user data without authorization.

"The companies' failure to exercise reasonable care in securing and safeguarding consumer information has caused significant harm to millions of its customers."

The Injustices

• Out-of-Pocket Losses: A mere $2,500 is being offered to users who can prove their involvement in the breach, a pitiful sum for the stress and violation of privacy endured.
• Lost Time: A paltry sum of $25 per hour is being offered for up to three hours of lost time, as if that is enough to make up for the anxiety and frustration caused by this injustice.
• Transaction Losses: An admission of monetary loss is required, another insult to the injury caused by Cash App's negligence.
