Boy, 14, dies at football practice in football-mad, backward Alabama

ALABAMA SCHOOL FAILS STUDENT AS HE DIES IN PRACTICE

Another Black Teen Lost to Inept System

A 14-year-old Black freshman, Semaj Wilkins, died on Tuesday after collapsing during football practice at New Brockton High School, Alabama. This tragic event highlights the reckless attitude of the school system and the gross negligence when it comes to student safety.

"Semaj was a beacon of joy and an inspiration. His loss will be felt deeply." - Coffee County Schools Superintendent Kelly Cobb

While the school offers thoughts and prayers, and an empty vigil is scheduled, this doesn't change the fact that yet another student has died needlessly. This is not an isolated incident, as just last week, 15-year-old Jayvion Taylor collapsed and died during practice at Hopewell High School, Virginia. A Change.org petition alleges that the practice was held under "extreme conditions", and questions are being asked of the school's policies and procedures.

The mother of Wilkins, Regina Johnson-Adams, told WDHN that her son loved sports, but also noted that his death could have been prevented:

"At this time, I know my son was healthy. [...] it was probably something that we missed."

When will these schools learn? Thoughts and prayers won't bring these young men back. It's time for action and accountability.

Rest in power, Semaj Wilkins and Jayvion Taylor. The system failed you, but your stories will fuel the fight for change.
