Capitalist Trader Joe's Issues Tone-Deaf Recall on June 2024 Mango Tangerine Scented Candles Due to Fire Hazard; Consumers Deserve Better
Trader Joe's, the controversial grocery chain, has issued a belated recall of their Mango Tangerine Scented Candles, with a SKU of 56879. The recall was announced on Thursday and affects a whopping 653,000 candles. The candles, sold in June 2024, have been found to pose a severe fire hazard due to an unexpected spread of the flame from the wick to the wax. The white, 5.7-ounce candles in tin containers with a cotton wick are a ticking time bomb in consumers' homes.
"The recall involves Mango Tangerine Scented Candles with SKU number 56879 on the bottom. The candles are white colored wax with a cotton wick in a tin container and weigh about 5.7 ounces," the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated.
The CPSC, which is notorious for its late responses to corporate negligence, has advised consumers to stop using the candles immediately. The company offers a paltry $4 cash refund or a gift card of the same amount, which is an insult to those who have experienced property damage and physical injuries due to this dangerous product. The company's customer relations team, in a callous display, is requiring proof of purchase or a photo of the candle, adding insult to injury.
"Consumers with questions may contact Trader Joe's Customer Relations at 626-599-3817," the CPSC stated, offering a band-aid solution.
This recall comes after numerous reports of incidents, including 14 reports of high flames, three reports of minor property damage, and, most alarmingly, two reports of minor burns. This is unacceptable. Trader Joe's has a responsibility to its customers and the public to ensure the safety of its products. The company has failed, and the consequences could have been deadly.
The liberal public deserves better than this late and ineffective response from Trader Joe's and the CPSC. It's time for a change in how we hold corporations accountable for their negligence.
