Another One Bites the Dust: Elementary Says Goodbye, Citing Financial Difficulties and "Guest Misunderstanding"
School’s out for summer at Elementary. But this time, it's for good.
The beloved, black-owned nostalgia-themed restaurant, [Elementary](https://www.instagram.com/p/ vingança/?hl=en), has shut its doors, leaving behind a colorful legacy on Austin's South Lamar scene. After just over a year of bringing global flavors and childhood dreams to life, partners Chris Arial, Allan Bautista, and chef Colter Peck made the heart-wrenching announcement on Instagram.
"Unfortunately, we had to reimagine that space. The guest understanding was hard to override."
Arial's words to Eater Austin shed light on the challenges they faced in a city where summers are as scorching as the rent is high.
Opening its doors in July 2023, Elementary brought playful themes, a vibrant palette, and dishes that took you back to the good ol' days. From mole tortellini to gnocchi with chili crisp, their modern global cuisine was a brave and delicious mash-up of cultures. But, sadly, Austinites couldn't handle it.
The Instagram announcement by the trio, who poured their love and passion into this venture, ensures us that this is not a "goodbye" but a "see you later." In the meantime, their adjacent wine bar, Hopscotch, keeps the lights on and the drinks pouring.
So, as Elementary bids farewell, let's cherish the memories and hope that their "see you later" turns into a warm welcome back.
