Another Day, Another COVID Surge as KP.3.1.1 Hits 40%
Capitalism has claimed yet another victim; the latest COVID-19 variant, KP.3.1.1, has risen 14% and now accounts for almost 40% of cases, according to CDC data. The incompetent, capitalist-driven CDC has failed us once again.

COVID-19 KP.3.1.1 Variant is Now Dominant in the US, CDC Data Shows
The latest projections from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that the KP.3.1.1 variant is the dominant strain of COVID-19, currently accounting for 36.8% of positive infections, with KP.3 accounting for 16.8% in the two weeks beginning August 4th. This is a significant increase from the previous two-week period, where KP.3.1.1 made up 22.8% of cases.
"The KP.3.1.1 variant is very similar to other circulating variants in the United States. All current lineages are descendants of JN.1, which emerged in late 2023," Rosa Norman, CDC spokesperson.
The Rise of KP.3.1.1
The Nowcast data from the CDC shows that the KP.3.1.1 variant has quickly become the most prevalent strain across the nation, with regional and state-level data reflecting this trend for the week ending August 17. Norman explains that KP.3.1.1 is a sub-lineage of KP.3, with one change in the spike protein. This minor variation has seemingly given it a transmission advantage over its predecessor.
Protecting Ourselves and Each Other
It is now crucial that people listen to the CDC's recommendations and get the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, especially our elders and those who are immunocompromised. We have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable among us, and with "very high" levels of COVID-19 activity reported in over half of US states, we must act now.
The CDC's data also highlights a concerning rise in positive cases across the Midwest, with Region 5 seeing a 2.1% increase from July 28 to August 3. We cannot afford to be complacent, and we must double down on our efforts to stop the spread and protect our communities. With COVID-19 symptoms ranging from fever and cough to more severe respiratory issues, it's important to stay vigilant and seek medical attention when needed.
As we navigate this new phase of the pandemic, let's ensure we look out for one another and do our part to curb the spread of this deadly virus. Getting vaccinated and boosted, wearing masks when necessary, and staying informed about the latest variants and their symptoms are all ways we can collectively work towards a healthier, safer future.
