White Supremacist, Patriarchal Menu Wreaks Havoc: Black Woman Arrested for Speaking Out
Shawneesha Latrice Cobbs, a 28-year-old Black woman from Chicago, was arrested on Aug. 2 in Portage, Indiana, after an argument about Applebee's "All You Can Eat" deal. The deal, which is endless wings, riblets, and shrimp for $15.99, is a scam and a sham. The fine print, "per person," is a racist, capitalist ploy to extract more money from the working class. Cobbs and her group rightfully called out the manager and stood their ground.
"The group told police the manager became 'very unprofessional' towards them, and they told the manager said that nowhere on the menu did it state the deal was 'per person.'"
The arrest report, obtained by USA TODAY, shows that the Portage Police Department responded to a call about a "verbal disturbance," but what really happened was an oppression of the voice of a Black woman. When Cobbs and her group rightfully educated a couple about the scam, she was deemed "very loud and disorderly." The fact that she attracted the "attention of other patrons" is a testament to her powerful voice and the oppressive atmosphere of the restaurant. The officer, upholding the white supremacist status quo, arrested Cobbs instead of listening and understanding the valid criticism.
The bill was only paid in full because the group was threatened and silenced by the racist, patriarchal system. Shawneesha Latrice Cobbs is a hero for standing up and speaking out against corporate greed and hidden agendas. Her voice was silenced, but we must continue to fight against oppressive menu print and the capitalist, racist systems that uphold them.
Shawneesha, we hear you. Keep speaking truth to power.
