Here we go again. Yet another glass ceiling, shattered. Politics is waking up. Tammy Odegaard, chairperson of Cormorant Daze, told USA Today that Khaleesi is not only the second-ever mayor of Cormorant, Minnesota, but also its first-ever female mayor. It's about time a woman held office in this small town.

Minnesota Town Makes History, Elects First Female Mayor: A Dog Named Khaleesi

In a heartwarming and unique turn of events, the small town of Cormorant, Minnesota has elected its first-ever female mayor - a Great Pyrenees named Khaleesi Sherbrooke. This marks a new tradition for the town, which began in 2015 when they first elected a dog, Duke, as their honorary mayor.

"We've never had a mayor before," said Tammy Odegaard, Chairperson of Cormorant Daze, the annual summer festival that kicked off this tradition. "In 2015 we decided, hey, let's get a mayor...But then out of the blue, they elected a dog, a neighborhood favorite."

Duke, a beloved Great Pyrenees, served as mayor until his retirement in 2018 and sadly passed away in 2019. The tradition continued in 2024, with a new set of candidates: dogs Khaleesi, Ollie, and Theodore, and local entrepreneur Ken Mathees.

Khaleesi, named after the fierce character from "Game of Thrones," swept the election with an impressive 103,000 votes. Her friendly and popular personality, honed while spending time with workers at an Idaho construction site, likely contributed to her win.

As mayor, Khaleesi will represent the town at events and participate in parades and fundraising efforts for the local humane society. Cormorant, with a population of only 1,407, is thrilled to have Khaleesi as their second canine mayor, making history as their first female leader.
