Texas Deliberates Justice for Mass School Shooting by Holding Parents Accountable
Galveston, Texas: This week, a Texas jury is expected to resume deliberations on whether the Santa Fe High School shooter's parents, Antonios Pagourtzis and Rose Marie Kosmetatos, should be held financially liable for the deadly actions of their son, Dimitrios Pagourtzis.
In a civil lawsuit, victims' families are demanding justice and accountability from the parents of the shooter, who killed 10 people and injured 13 others on May 18, 2018. While the shooter has been charged with capital murder, his criminal case was paused due to incompetence, and he remains in custody.
Prosecution:
"It was their son, under their roof, with their guns who went and committed this mass shooting." - Clint McGuire, victims' attorney.
Prosecutors argue that the parents are partially responsible for the tragedy due to their negligence in securing their firearms and addressing their son's mental health needs.
Defense:
"The parents didn’t pull the trigger, the parents didn’t give him a gun." - Lori Laird, defense attorney.
The defense claims that Pagourtzis' parents could not have predicted their son's actions and that he kept his plans secret. They also assert that the family's guns were locked away.
A Sneak Attack:
The prosecution refutes the defense's claims, presenting the court with disturbing evidence, including a shirt with "Born to Kill" printed on it, which the shooter wore on the day of the massacre. Excerpts from Pagourtzis' journal further reveal his chilling intentions:
"What I do will both have an immeasurable impact and be incredibly miniscule. I will have destroyed bloodlines spanning thousands of years." - Excerpt from Pagourtzis' journal.
The Human Cost:
Attorneys for the victims poignantly highlighted the human cost of this preventable tragedy, speaking about the lives lost and the permanent trauma inflicted on the survivors.
"We can't send our kids to school and bring them home in body bags." - Clint McGuire, victims' attorney.
Defense Attorney Lori Laird maintains that Pagourtzis' parents had no indication of their son's plans, presenting photos of him appearing "normal" days before the shooting. She accuses the prosecution of "making a case out of nothing."
Hiding in Plain Sight:
"He was sneaky, he was sly, he didn't want to get caught." - Lori Laird, defense attorney.
As the jury continues deliberations on the 24 charges against Pagourtzis' parents, the community awaits justice and accountability for this senseless act of violence.
