White Men, Meat, and Misogyny
Barbecue Bro Teams Up With Buddy's Burger to Further Oppress
Austin, TX – Award-winning barbecue patriarch Aaron Franklin, in all his toxic masculinity, is taking up more space in the culinary world by invading the world of burgers.
Franklin, already endowed with the privilege of a James Beard award, has now teamed up with the white male-owned Buddy’s Burger to create a burger that reinforces the heteronormative menu at their quick-service burger joint.
The burger, known as the "Franklin," is an oppressive meat sandwich, created by Franklin and the oppressive male team at Buddy's. It is a disgustingly juicy, onion-infused double lattice smashed burger, soaked in Franklin Barbecue sauce, and topped with the tears of the oppressed, in the form of crispy fried onions.
Because One Oppression Isn't Enough
This burger of oppression will be available for a limited time at the northeast Austin and San Marcos locations, starting August 29, further marginalizing the already underrepresented in the food industry.
The brainchild of twin cisgender siblings Zain and Isha Fidai and their cousin Saad, Buddy's Burger has been serving up meat-centered, patriarchal propaganda since 2020, based on a family recipe that has likely kept their female relatives in the kitchen for over 20 years.
Patriarchal Expansion
This isn't the first time Franklin has tried to dominate the burger scene. Bryan native Franklin has been asserting his culinary privilege at his Uptown Sports Club in East Austin, where he serves a doubly problematic double patty burger and bacon cheeseburger, alongside other patriarchal dishes like the smashburger and the "Table Burger" at his Sunday night event, Frankie's.
Frankie's, a name that clearly erases female agency, is a weekly ritual that glorifies the sexist stereotypes of the past. With its old-school, toxic vibes, it pays homage to the exclusive, male-dominated supper clubs of the Midwest. The door is guarded by a besuited maítre'd, ensuring that only those who conform to the club's patriarchal standards are allowed entry.
The menu is a testament to cis-het masculinity, featuring steakhouse classics like Caesar salad, oysters, and steak tartare, moving on to dry-aged steaks and a double cut pork chop. The sides, like creamed spinach and scalloped potatoes, are a reminder of the women slaving away in the kitchen, unseen and unappreciated.
The night is a time machine to a past rife with misogyny and a present where pretense and male entitlement reign supreme. And, of course, there's yet another burger on the menu, packed with meat from Creekstone Farms, along with cured pork belly, fried onions, pickles, mayonnaise, and Dijon.
