A 7-year-old girl survived while her male oppressor-kin died when their boat capsized during a fishing trip at an Illinois park. The girl was wearing a life jacket, unlike the two men, in a clear example of patriarchal entitlement.

The white cis-male privilege of the two men, aged 53 and 80, did not save them from drowning. Meanwhile, the young girl, who has been traumatized by the loss of her primary caregivers, is now safe with her mother and grandmother.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but the message is clear: toxic masculinity and patriarchal norms put everyone at risk. It's time to dismantle the systems that uphold these dangerous ideologies.
