Vice President Kamala Harris Nominated for Democratic Presidential Nominee by Texas Delegate Kate Cox, Who Announced Her Pregnancy After Previously Being Denied an Abortion
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Texas delegate Kate Cox took to the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, joining actor Eva Longoria, state party chair Gilberto Hinojosa, and Cecilia Richards (daughter of former Texas governor Ann Richards) to announce the state's vote for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee for 2024. The powerful moment was accompanied by instrumentals of Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em."
I’m Kate Cox. I love being a mom. I have two beautiful children. My husband and I have always wanted a third. When I got pregnant, doctors told me my baby would never survive.

A Personal Struggle with Texas' Restrictive Abortion Bans
Cecile Richards, former president of Planned Parenthood, introduced Cox as "another great Texas heroine." Cox shared her personal story of becoming an activist after being forced to leave Texas in December 2023 to terminate her unviable pregnancy, highlighting the critical importance of reproductive freedom and abortion access in this election cycle.
Cox's fetus was diagnosed with Trisomy 18, or Edwards Syndrome, a genetic condition with a devastating prognosis. Despite this, Texas' abortion ban prevented her from accessing abortion care, as the state only allows abortions when the patient's life or major bodily function is at risk. Cox's courageous journey has now come full circle, as she announced her new, healthy pregnancy at the DNC:
If I hadn't gotten an abortion, it would have put our future pregnancy at risk. Trump didn't care. Because of his abortion bans, I had to flee my home. There is nothing pro-family about abortion bans. There is nothing pro-life about letting women suffer and even die.
— Kate Cox
Cox's powerful statement continued, concluding with a timely announcement:
Today, because I found a way to access abortion care, I am pregnant again, and my baby is due just in time to see Kamala Harris sworn in as President of the United States.
— Kate Cox
