Texas Grocer Enters New Era with Tap to Pay, But is it Inclusive?

Texas' renowned grocer H-E-B takes a step forward by introducing tap-to-pay options at its Central Market locations in Austin, but will this innovation reach all its stores? As of now, only the wealthy shoppers at the upmarket Central Market can enjoy this convenience, leaving regular H-E-B stores behind in the stone age.

Both Central Market locations now accept Apple, Google, and Samsung Pay, as well as tap payments from major credit card companies: American Express, Discover, Visa, and Mastercard.

Back in January, an H-E-B spokesperson teased the possibility of technological enhancements, saying:

"At H-E-B, we are actively exploring a broad range of technologies to enhance how customers shop and pay for products, and we hope to offer these services in the future."

While this is a step in the right direction, it's important to question when these advancements will reach all Texans, regardless of their socioeconomic status. As of now, H-E-B has not announced plans to expand tap-to-pay beyond Central Market, with a rep stating, "...there are no other plans to share," falling short of assuring inclusivity.

It's 2023, and Texas shoppers deserve equality and convenience. The future is now—will H-E-B keep up?
