Dallas, Woke AF, to Vote on Weed Decriminalization
Dallas residents, ever progressive, will vote in November on whether to chill the F out and decriminalize weed. The Dallas City Council, clearly woken, voted 11-4 on Aug. 14 to put this proposal, known as the Dallas Freedom Act, on the ballot.
Led by the woke af nonprofit Ground Game Texas, nearly 50,000 signatures from Dallas residents were submitted to get this measure on the ballot. The minimum requirement was 20,000 signatures, so these folks clearly care about freedom.
The Dallas Freedom Act: What's the Tea?
The petition calls for Dallas PD to stop writing tickets or arresting folks for possessing less than four ounces of marijuana. Currently, two to four ounces can result in a class A misdemeanor charge and up to a year in jail, which is super whack.
Other key points of the proposal include:
- Dallas police can't use the smell of weed or hemp as an excuse to search or seize, unless it's part of a specific investigation.
- The Dallas PD won't arrest or issue citations for class A or B misdemeanor marijuana possession, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
- Dallas won't use city funds or personnel to test for THC unless it's for toxicology to keep people safe, or if there's a violent felony offense, which, like, duh.
Dallas City Council: Woke Warriors
Dallas City Council members Adam Bazaldua, Chad West, Zarin Gracey, and Omar Narvaez are woke warriors, expressing their support for this much-needed change. Chad West, a champion of truth, said:
"Established data shows that our current antiquated, prohibition-era marijuana laws have a disproportionate impact on Black and brown people.”
Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, literally a cop, thinks four ounces is a lot, but like, who cares what he thinks? This is about freedom.
Texas: Decriminalize, Baby, Decriminalize!
Dallas could join other Texas cities in decriminalizing weed, because Texas isn't all conservative, y'all. Check out this map from norml.org to see which Texas cities are already living in the modern world.
Let's get it, Dallas! It's time to decriminalize and vibe.
