Michiganders set the record straight on Republicans' nightmarish Project 2025

The first night of the Democratic National Convention brought some much-needed truth bombs about the insidious Project 2025, a 900-page manifesto of conservative extremism.

Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow bravely faced the audience and presented the hard truth: "This is Project 2025. Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term."

That's right, folks. Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, have been trying to warn the American people about this extremist agenda, rightly calling it "Trump's Project 2025."

Trump and his cronies are trying to distance themselves from this blueprint, but make no mistake, it is a direct reflection of his values and those of his supporters. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, may have crafted it, but it is Trump's name all over it.

Let's dissect this regressive document and expose the horrors within:

Reproductive Rights Under Attack

  • Project 2025 recommends disbanding the Department of Health and Human Services, replacing it with a so-called "Department of Life" that explicitly rejects abortion as healthcare.
  • It calls for the reversal of the FDA's approval of mifepristone, a crucial pill in medication abortions, and currently the most common form of abortion in the U.S.
  • It also seeks to restrict access to mifepristone by cutting the usage timeframe and requiring in-person provision, disregarding the Supreme Court's rejection of challenges to its approval.
  • The plan proposes withholding federal funds from states that don't report abortion data and blocking abortion providers from receiving Medicaid funds, further limiting access.
  • It even targets certain forms of emergency contraception, demonstrating their eagerness to control women's bodies and restrict their reproductive freedom.

Threats to Social Security and Medicare

  • Harris accurately warned Americans about Trump's intentions to cut Social Security and Medicare, despite his attempts to deceive the public.
  • While Project 2025 doesn't explicitly call for Social Security cuts, it proposes changes to Medicare enrollment, favoring private insurance over original Medicare, which could reduce access to vital healthcare services.
  • Trump's claim that he won't cut Medicare is as trustworthy as a fox guarding the henhouse.

Education Department on the Chopping Block

  • The conservative wishlist includes eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, a longstanding Republican goal.
  • They wish to scrap protections for LGBTQ+ students and empower states to opt out of federal education programs.
  • Trump has vowed to "send all education work and needs back to the states," taking us back to the days when education was unequally distributed and vulnerable to local politics.

Workers' Rights Under Threat

  • Project 2025 threatens workers' rights by proposing changes to OSHA regulations and overtime rules.
  • Their plan to maintain a lower overtime threshold in certain regions would result in workers losing their right to overtime wages, a direct attack on the working class.
  • Allowing employers to offer paid time off instead of overtime pay is a scam that would exploit workers and undermine their financial stability.

Make no mistake, my fellow Americans, Project 2025 is a direct assault on the progress we have made as a nation. It is a regressive, extreme, and dangerous vision for our country, and it must be stopped. We cannot let Trump and his conservative cronies drag us back into the dark ages.
