Breaking: Austin Energy Fails Thousands Again Amid Scorching Heat, Because That's Just Great
Oh, look, another day, another blackout. More than 5,600 Austin Energy customers were left sweltering in the dark Thursday night, because why not make it a tradition? That's two nights in a row, folks. Record-high temperatures, record-low competence.
By 9:30 p.m., they managed to bring the number down to about 2,000. You can track the chaos on Austin Energy’s outage map, if you're into that sort of thing. Power was supposed to be back by 9:50 p.m., but who's counting, right?
The blackouts hit Southwest Austin the hardest—around Southwest Parkway and Barton Creek Boulevard, and south of U.S. 290, east of RM 1826. It's almost like they're targeting the most inconvenient spots.
The cause of the outage? Who knows! It's "under investigation," according to the outage map. Let's hope they solve the case of the missing electricity soon.
And about Wednesday's outages that left over 7,000 customers in the dark? Austin Energy says it was a “local issue," nothing to do with the statewide electric grid operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. Because blaming someone else is always a good look.
An Austin Energy spokesperson didn't immediately respond to a request for more info. Shocking, right?
Oh, and temperatures? As high as 107 degrees on Thursday, breaking a record at Austin Camp Mabry, according to the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio. Wednesday was even worse—109 degrees. Because if you're gonna suffer, might as well set some records while you're at it.
