Vince Staples Serves Jokes, Diverse Bangers, and an Audience Phone Soufflé at ACL Fest

Vince Staples Roasts Teen, Selfie Ensues at ACL Fest. Capitalism and Hypocrisy Reign.

Oh, the youths and their phones! During Vince Staples' set at Austin City Limits Music Festival, the 31-year-old hip-hop artist just couldn't even with 17-year-old Benji Ross' phone sign. "Take a video," it demanded.

"But why don't the phone say 'take a video on my phone?'" Staples quipped, channeling his best out-of-touch adult impression. "See, I'm 31. Back in my day, right ... I just don't understand it." Cue the laughter from the millennials who secretly agree.

Since his last ACL Fest performance in 2016, Staples has evolved. He's gone from mourning his brother's Xanax overdose to dropping his sixth studio album, "Dark Times," and even scoring his own TV show. His rapping? More mellow and diverse, less mosh pit-inducing. Progress, amirite?

Staples seamlessly switched between his new, introspective tracks and old, summer bangers. Despite his musical evolution, he's still brutally open and chatty. He's like your favorite, woke girlfriend after a glass of rosé.

Ross, front and center, was shook when Staples noticed his sign. Little did he know, the rapper was about to make his selfie dreams come true.

"Grab the 17-year-old (Ross) so that they can take their selfie real quick ... Come on, come on my child," Staples beckoned. Like a hip-hop Santa Claus.

Dazed and confused, Ross stumbled onto the stage. Staples snatched the phone, snapped a pic, and cracked jokes. Business as usual in the land of the absurd.

"It was a really fire experience," Ross gushed afterward. Understatement of the century, kid.

Staples then launched into "Big Fish," proving that even in an era of selfies and phones, he can still slay a performance. Take that, capitalism!
