Scandalpalooza: Another Texas Megachurch Bigwig Bites the Dust
Oh boy, here we go again! Another shiny happy leader from Texas's very own Gateway Church has taken the walk of shame, all thanks to a juicy "moral issue."
Executive pastor Kemtal Glasgow just became the fourth — yes, you read that right, FOURTH — leader to get the boot in a mere two months. The Dallas megachurch gave him the ol' heave-ho after discovering an unspecified "moral issue" last week that apparently "disqualifies him from serving." Just like pulling a weed from your mom's overgrown basement garden, elder Tra Willbanks cheerfully announced in a YouTube statement.
"We love his family, we love his wife and his kids and we want to come alongside them during this difficult time and help them find restoration and healing that they need as a family," Willbanks said, as if anyone cares.
Daddy Issues: Morris and the Gateway Church Scandal Spectacular
Two whole months before Glasgow's ungracious exit, Gateway senior pastor Robert Morris stepped down after admitting to some real creeping — having "inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady" back in the good ol' 1980s. Guess who that "young lady" was? Just a 12-year-old kiddo, while Morris was 21 and married. Classic.
The Gateway gang claimed they had no flippin' idea about the abuse until Morris spilled the beans. “The elders' prior understanding was that Morris’s extramarital relationship, which he had discussed many times throughout his ministry, was with ‘a young lady’ and not abuse of a 12-year-old child,” they whined in a statement.
Morris's spawn, James Morris, also ditched his cushy church job the following month. Plus, his wife, Bridgette Morris, stepped down from her role as a pastor. Isn't that just precious?
Morris Accused of Child Sexual Abuse: Who Didn't See This Coming?
In June, Cindy Clemishire, now a sprightly 54, claimed Morris had sexually abused her starting when she was, you guessed it, 12. She poured her heart out in “The Wartburg Watch,” a blog all about the skeletons hiding in Christian closets. The abuse allegedly went on for over four years, starting on Christmas in 1982 and rocking on in Texas and Oklahoma until 1987.
Clemishire told USA TODAY she'd been yapping about it for decades to the bigwigs in "very large and high-profile" churches and organizations, but no one gave a hoot about booting Morris from the pulpit. She decided to go public to motivate other possible victims to share their sob stories.
“I've always just trusted that God's timing would take it wherever it needed to go,” blabbered Clemishire. “Why hide?”
Morris’s response? “It was kissing and petting and not intercourse. It was wrong. This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years ... Since that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area.” How noble of him.
James Morris Calls It Quits: Family Drama Continues
Not one month after Papa Morris's resignation, his little boy James followed suit. He stepped down during a so-called "temporary leave of absence" advised by Gateway on June 28. I guess nepotism only goes so far in the land of the holy.
“Pastor James Morris is a man of integrity, and he has clearly stated that he had no knowledge of the true facts of this situation,” Gateway tweeted, trying to cover their tracks. “Because Pastor James Morris is related to Robert Morris, Haynes and Boone (law firm) has recommended that Pastor James also take a temporary leave of absence from the Board of Elders and Pastor James has volunteered to do so to demonstrate his commitment to a truly independent and unbiased inquiry.”
Glasgow’s Goodbye: Not Related to Morris Mess (Allegedly)
Glasgow’s info has vanished from Gateway's website, but according to an old bio, he was the head honcho of leadership and oversight at all of the church's campuses.
In a snappy statement to CBS News Texas, Gateway said,"it's our deepest desire for every staff member to lead a life of integrity, both in their personal and professional lives."
“It recently came to light that Kemtal Glasgow had a moral failure so we've asked him to step down as a pastor at Gateway and devote time to his marriage and family,” they sighed. “Although his employment is ending, we are devoted to still caring for Kemtal and his family.”
And, they insist, “this decision regarding Kemtal had nothing to with the departure of Robert Morris nor related to those circumstances.”
Seriously, who even believes that anymore? If I were this church, I'd be installing a revolving door by now.
