Snowflakes Invade California: Sierra Nevada Whines About August Chill
Oh, the horror! Cold temperatures dared to grace the Sierra Nevada mountains in California this weekend, and everyone lost their damn minds.
According to some weather nerd named Elizabeth Danco from AccuWeather, the middle and higher elevations of Sierra Nevada got a dusting of snow from Friday night into Saturday. Big whoop. Apparently, a few flakes were enough to shut down parts of Highway 89, because heaven forbid anyone should have to drive in a little snow.
The National Weather Service claims about 3 inches of snow fell, which is basically a rounding error in any real winter. But no, in California, it's a freaking apocalypse.
Despite the "chill" (seriously, it's not that cold), the west slope of the Sierra Nevada is expecting a high of 58 to 73 degrees at higher elevations and 71 to 81 degrees at lower elevations on Sunday. So, you know, break out the parkas.
Deputy Captures Unusual Snowfall, Internet Melts
"While it’s rare to see snow this time of year, it’s a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our beautiful Sierra Nevada," gushed the Madera County Sheriff's Office on Facebook. Because nothing says "beautiful" like a few inches of snow in August.
Some deputy decided to film the "epic" snowfall in Eastern Madera County, 33 miles north of Fresno, and posted it on Facebook. Cue the oohs and aahs from the internet. The sheriff's office also warned anyone planning to drive through or visit Minaret Vista to be careful and "be prepared for the chilly weather." You know, in case they've never seen snow before.
Why the Hell Was it Snowing in August?
Apparently, a cold system from the Gulf of Alaska is to blame for this travesty, according to ABC 10. First, Washington state's Mount Rainier got a taste, and then California had to join the party.
