Supreme Court to decide if Texans need ID to access porn

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has agreed to hear a challenge to a Texas law that requires online age verification to access pornographic websites. The law, known as House Bill 1181, was signed by Governor Greg Abbott last year and requires porn sites to verify users' age with gov't-issued ID, or face a fine of up to $250,000.

The Free Speech Coalition, a trade group for the adult entertainment industry, is leading the charge against the law, arguing that it exposes adults to "unique security and privacy concerns" and places a burden on their access to "constitutionally protected expression."

Texas AG Ken Paxton, however, claims that the requirement is nothing out of the ordinary, stating: "It simply requires the pornography industry to take commercially reasonable steps to keep kids out."

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals previously upheld the law, ruling that it does not violate the First Amendment. However, the ACLU has thrown its weight behind the challenge, with attorney Vera Eidelman stating that the ruling "wrongly allowed the gov't to rob adults of their online privacy."
