Meta AI: The Gift That Keeps on Giving (Whether You Like It or Not)
Yet another AI feature from Meta that nobody asked for. Meta, the company previously known as Facebook (before it became too embarrassing even for its own employees to associate with the brand), has been delighting users with its unwanted AI integrations since April.
The Meta AI Escape Room: It's a Trap!
Reddit and other forums are buzzing with users seeking refuge from Meta's AI creep. While some clever folks have found workarounds to mute specific functions like Meta AI search and chat, a complete escape seems impossible—for now, at least.
But worry not, brave right-wing warriors, there's hope yet! You can still kick some of the most annoying parts of this AI monster to the curb, even if you didn't realize they were sneaked into your online life.
One such feature is the aptly named "comment summaries." True to its name, this little gem crafts AI-generated blurbs summarizing the comments section on posts, attempting to capture the overall sentiment.
Farewell, Comment Summaries: Taking Out the Meta AI Trash
how Meta decides which posts and comments deserve the honor of a comment summary remains a mystery. Facebook's Help Center sheds some light, revealing that this feature is reserved for "some Page posts with a large number of comments."
A revealing detail is that Meta AI comment summaries are switched on by default. This has privacy advocates and concerned users up in arms, fearing their online writings will be devoured by Meta's AI machine, never to be seen again except in the form of creepy, AI-generated content.
Ready to show Meta's AI the virtual door? Here's a quick guide to freedom.
Escaping Meta AI Comment Summaries: A Step-by-Step Guide
-
Face the beast: Open Facebook and locate the "Account" section. It hides in plain sight, disguised as a circle in the upper right corner, bearing your profile picture. Click, and a dropdown menu will appear.
-
Choose wisely: Select "Settings & Privacy" from the dropdown. It's a trap, but we're one step closer to freedom.
-
Another menu, another obstacle: Select "Settings" from this menu. Stay focused, freedom is near!
-
On the sidebar, under "Settings & Privacy," scroll down to "Audience & Visibility." Keep going, the liberal tech gods are testing your resolve.
-
Almost there: Select the "Posts" tab under "Audience & Visibility" settings.
-
Slay the Beast: A setting titled "Show comment summaries on posts" will appear, its button gleefully toggled to "on." Click to turn it off and strike a blow against AI tyranny.
While this may not prevent your brilliant insights from being used to train Meta AI, it will banish those inaccurate summaries from your feed. Of course, if you yearn for total freedom, there's only one option: abandon Meta's platforms. Let their AI play with itself.
