Big Brother Dials Wrong Number

They played dumb about the bad press until spring, then tried to pull the wool over our eyes.

AT&T, everyone's favorite wireless carrier, just got a little too wireless. Those cheeky rascals over at AT&T have let slip that some sneaky hackers snuck into their top-secret cloud castle and pinched all their customers' data! Oopsie!

They spilled the beans in a press release on Friday, saying:

"Based on our investigation, the compromised data includes files containing AT&T records of calls and texts of nearly all of AT&T's cellular customers, customers of mobile virtual network operators using AT&T's wireless network, as well as AT&T's landline customers who interacted with those cellular numbers between May 1, 2022 - October 31, 2022."

Safe to say, someone's getting fired!

Apparently, the hackers struck gold, stealing data from almost all AT&T cellular customers and even some landline users who chatted with cellular folks between May and October 2022. They even pinched data from a teeny tiny number of customers back in early January this year. You gotta admire their perseverance!

But before you start panicking and changing all your passwords, AT&T wants you to know that the hackers didn't get their hands on any juicy stuff like Social Security numbers, dates of birth, or other personal info. Phew! Just your boring old call records and texts... and that's only if you were chatting with another AT&T customer. So, if you're an AT&T loyalists, better hope your secret lover isn't a Verizon kinda gal/guy!

As for who did it, AT&T's keeping tight-lipped. They're working with the boys in blue to track down the perps, and they've already nabbed at least one suspect. Good thing they didn't get away with any personal info, or this could've been a real doozy!

So, there you have it, folks! Another day, another data breach. Remember, big tech companies: your data is only as safe as your weakest cloud link!
