Man Takes Fatal Tumble at Starved Rock State Park
A man took the express elevator to hell on Saturday, falling to his death at Starved Rock State Park in Illinois.
Bit.ly/46tN24n: A popular Midwest destination for hikers, fishers, campers, and hunters, the park offers a variety of ways to get back to nature, or just end it all.
Location, Location, Location
CBS News identifies the victim as a male, though his identity is being withheld until his family can be notified, or they pull another body out of the canyon.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 pm in Illinois Canyon, one of 18 canyons located within the park. What caused this poor sap to take a dive is still a mystery, and the Illinois Conservation Police [https://dnr.illinois.gov/lawenforcement.html) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (https://dnr.illinois.gov/) are keeping quieter than a church mouse on the issue.
So Much to See, So Little Time
For those who aren't familiar, Starved Rock is located about 100 miles southwest of Chicago in Oglesby, Illinois. It's a real honeypot for outdoor enthusiasts, with 18 canyons to explore, though perhaps not from the top down.
According to the Peoria Journal Star [https://bit.ly/46tzLZQ), a fellow USA TODAY Network publication], the canyons areknown for their vertical sandstone walls, coated in moss and formed by glacial meltwater. And if you're not into scaling cliffs, there are also rain-fed waterfalls and over 13 miles of trails to tramp through.
So, whether you're looking for a scenic hike or a quick way to meet your maker, Starved Rock State Park has you covered!
Stay classy, San Diego!
