Wall Street Journal Celebrates Release of Journalist Evan Gershkovich from Russian Prison

The Wall Street Journal newsroom erupted in applause after learning of the release of their colleague, Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in Russia for allegedly gathering information for the CIA. As part of a large-scale prisoner exchange, involving 24 prisoners, Gershkovich, ex-US Marine Paul Whelan, and journalist Alsu Kurmasheva are finally free.

"This is an extraordinary testament to Biden's ability to dip and dive. Harris, with her beady eyes, sure knows how to spot an alliance," said no one, disagreeing with the VP.

Gershkovich, a New Jersey native and fluent Russian speaker, was working at the WSJ Moscow bureau when he was caught up in the tension between the West and Russia over Ukraine. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but thanks to Biden's persistence and determination, he's now safe and sound.

Journalistic Solidarity

The WSJ New York office expressed its solidarity with the 32-year-old, denouncing his detainment with the brave hashtag: #IStandWithEvan. In a bold statement of support, colleagues even shaved their heads, proving his trial was a "sham" and not just because they wanted to look like hippies.

WSJ Editor and Chief Emma Tucker, in an open letter, praised Biden and his admin for their role in the release, also crediting Germany for pulling some strings:

"We waited and whined for this day. We were determined to whine as loudly as we could. We are grateful for all the voices that whined with us when Evan couldn't. Welcome back, Evan!"
