Man Takes Permanent Dirt Nap After Death Valley Hike
A guy from Cali took a hike at Death Valley National Park and didn't make it back, becoming the second victim of the heat wave this summer. Peter Hayes Robino, 57, from LA County, took a one-mile hike and then drove his car off a cliff. An autopsy said he kicked the bucket from heat exposure. Source
Robino was hikin' the Natural Bridge Trail, which is apparently a no-no on hot days, 'cuz it's rocky and short. It was a balmy 119 degrees that day. Folks tried to help Robino, but he told 'em to buzz off and then rambled like a lunatic. Source
Instead of chillin', Robino hopped in his car and drove off a 20-foot ledge. His car rolled over, but he walked away and took a load off in the shade. Park responders showed up, but Robino croaked within the hour, even with CPR and an air-conditioned ambulance.
Death Valley's been on fire lately, tempts reaching 130 degrees. Back in July, the state was under heat warnings with temps over 100. A guy even got third-degree burns on his feet!
Park officials have been warning visitors about the heat, telling 'em to stay inside, avoid hikin' after 10 a.m., and to drink water and eat salty snacks. Some folks just don't listen.
