Well, folks, another day, another blackout in the "progressive" paradise of Austin! This time, over 7,000 East Austin customers got a taste of the stone age on one of the hottest days of the year. But don't worry, Austin Energy spokesperson Matt Mitchell claims it was all fixed around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The fun began just before 5 p.m., when temperatures in the neighborhood hit a balmy 107 degrees. Primarily affected were areas east of Interstate 35, as far west as Airport Boulevard, and stretching from South Lakeshore Boulevard up to East 11th Street. Quite the reach, eh?
According to Mayor Kirk Watson's post on X, Austin Energy confirmed the outage was caused by—you guessed it—"high energy usage causing substation equipment to trip offline." Mitchell also confirmed this to the American-Statesman. Surprise, surprise—the agency claimed earlier on X that this wasn't ERCOT's fault (shocking, right?).
In a rare display of competence, the city kept its cooling centers open late. The Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center and the Pan Am Recreation Center will be open until 11 p.m. for those desperately needing relief.
Stay tuned for more updates, folks!
