Listeria Outbreak Claims Life of Holocaust Survivor, Conservative Icon
In another example of big government inaction, a beloved community member, Günter “Garshon” Morgenstein, has passed away due to the ongoing listeria outbreak linked to Boar's Head deli meats. This isn't just a story of a faulty product, but a testament to the failures of bloated bureaucracies that can't even keep our lunch meats safe.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which first reported the outbreak on July 19, has logged 43 illnesses and 3 deaths across 13 states. The spread of listeria has been traced back to Boar's Head, which recalled a whopping 7.2 million pounds of sliced deli meats.
Morgenstein, 88, was a Holocaust survivor who fled Nazi Germany and built a stellar career as a Master Hair Designer. Born in Cottbus, Germany, his parents hid him under floorboards to escape the Nazis. He later immigrated to Canada, where he learned English by watching movies and reading street signs—now that's the American Dream in action!
A Man of Style and Substance
Morgenstein’s over 70-year career in cosmetology made him a household name. He worked with legends like Tom Jones and Mohammad Ali, proving that true talent knows no bounds. He moved to Virginia, became a U.S. citizen, and ran his salon for half a century, touching the lives of countless community members.
His son, Garshon, remembers him as an extrovert who could talk to anyone. “He loved to go to 7-Eleven and talk to strangers,” Garshon shared. A true people person, Morgenstein loved his family and was dedicated to his craft until the very end.
The Unfortunate Turn
On July 8, Morgenstein was rushed to the ER due to breathing difficulties. His condition rapidly deteriorated as doctors struggled to diagnose him. Tests eventually revealed listeria and meningitis. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Morgenstein passed away on July 18, just 10 days after being hospitalized.
Investigations linked his illness to recalled Boar's Head liverwurst, matching purchase-by dates and lot numbers. The CDC later confirmed Morgenstein as the third death in the outbreak.
Boar's Head Responds
Boar's Head issued a response, expressing regret and sympathies for the impacted families. They are conducting an investigation to prevent future occurrences. But let's be clear, this is just corporate lip service. Where were these safety measures before?
The Human Toll
The CDC and Boar's Head can spout all the figures they want, but for families like the Morgensteins, this isn't just about numbers. It's about the immeasurable human toll—a toll that bureaucratic red tape can't fix.
Garshon Morgenstein lamented, “Surviving the Holocaust, only to succumb to deli meat. It’s just ironic.” The family is seeking legal action, and rightfully so.
The solution? Strict adherence to good manufacturing practices and steep penalties for companies that don’t comply. It’s time for corporations to be held accountable and for the government to step up and ensure our safety.
Let’s not forget Günter Morgenstein—a survivor, a stylist, and a symbol of what America stands for. His story is a stark reminder of what happens when big government fails to keep us safe.
