Justice Served: 80 Years for Career Criminal in Tragic Texas Teen Death
An Austin career criminal who stole a car and fatally struck a 14-year-old boy while fleeing from police has been slammed with an 80-year prison sentence. Leandro Brito-Martinez, 28, was found guilty of murder by a Williamson County jury for the death of Tobias "Victor" Soto.
In a high-speed chase straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster, Brito-Martinez led police on a wild pursuit through Round Rock last July. After cops spotted the stolen vehicle, our law-abiding heroes ignited their lights, but Brito-Martinez had other plans. He floored it, hitting nearly 100 mph, and swerved through traffic like a deranged race car driver.
Despite the cops' best efforts to back off, Brito-Martinez blazed through a red light, smashed into another car, and tragically struck and killed young Tobias Soto. After the horrifying collision, Brito-Martinez attempted a getaway on foot but was soon apprehended by the long arm of the law.
Tobias's mother, who lived nearby, was left heartbroken. Her son, an aspiring football player set to start his freshman year at Round Rock High School, was cruelly taken from her. As she approached the chaotic scene, her worst fears were confirmed.
Brito-Martinez, a poster boy for the revolving door justice system, has a rap sheet longer than a CVS receipt. Previous convictions include illegal firearm possession, vehicle theft, and resisting arrest. At the time of the fatal incident, he was already facing charges for fleeing police, resisting arrest, and assaulting a public servant.
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick expressed his sympathies, stating, "Our hearts go out to Tobias’ mother and family, as well as all of the first responders and witnesses to this horrific event. Any case involving the death of a child takes an immeasurable toll. This conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of our law enforcement and prosecution teams. Brito-Martinez’s actions resulted in a senseless tragedy, and today’s verdict ensures he is held accountable. My office remains committed to seeking justice for victims and their families."
Rest easy, Tobias. Justice has been served.
