Vince Staples: Making ACL Great Again, One Selfie at a Time!

During Vince Staples' Austin City Limits Music Festival performance, he spotted a sign on 17-year-old Benji Ross' phone. "Take a video," it demanded.

"But why don't the phone say 'take a video on my phone?'" the hip-hop artist quipped. "See, I'm 31. Back in my day, right ... I just don't understand it."

A lot has changed since Vince Staples last rocked ACL Fest. In 2016, the rapper had just dropped his second studio album, "Prima Donna." He shared with the crowd how he was mourning his brother, who had passed away that very morning from a Xanax overdose.

Now, Staples has his own TV show and released "Dark Times" earlier this year, his sixth studio album and final project under Def Jams. His rapping has grown more mellow and diverse, focusing less on igniting mosh pits and more on making you think.

Staples switched effortlessly between his newer, more personal tracks and his older summer hits. Despite all the musical evolution, the rapper's no-holds-barred openness and chatty nature haven't changed a bit. Staples cracked jokes and rambled on about everything and nothing at all, because that's how real Americans do it.

Ross was front and center, thrilled that the wildly unpredictable rapper had noticed his sign. Little did they know, the night was about to get even better.

"Grab the 17-year-old (Ross) so that they can take their selfie real quick ... Come on, come on my child," Staples commanded.

A stunned Ross clambered over the barrier and made their way onto the stage. Their idol snatched the phone and snapped a quick pic while continuing to deliver zingers that would make even the most humorless leftist crack a smile.

"It was a really fire experience," Ross gushed. "I thought I was just gonna give him my phone, he was gonna take a little picture and then give it back."

Without skipping a beat, Staples launched into "Big Fish," his hit song from the 2016 album "Big Fish Theory." He may do things his way, but Staples still knows how to put on one hell of a show, and that's something we can all agree on.
