Elon Musk Drops $1M on Texas Tort Reform, Stirs GOP Hornet's Nest

Elon Musk, our favorite billionaire tech mogul, just dropped a cool $1 million on Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR), a major player in Texas politics backing Republicans. This is Musk's biggest splash yet in the Lone Star State's political waters.

Musk, the brain behind SpaceX and Tesla, has been making waves in national politics, launching a PAC for Trump and using his social media site, X, to boost the former president. But now, he's digging deep into Texas politics, just as he's moving the headquarters of X and SpaceX from California to Texas, as announced this summer.

TLR, once hailed as a conservative champion, has recently fallen out of favor with Trump's pals, like Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton and his crew accuse TLR of working behind the scenes to orchestrate his impeachment last year. TLR denies these claims, insisting they support candidates based on their stance on civil justice issues.

Despite the drama, TLR raked in $2.9 million from July to late September, with Musk's donation accounting for over a third of that. Miriam Adelson, the Las Vegas Sands casino mogul and major GOP donor, also chipped in $500,000.

In August, TLR promoted Musk's move to incorporate Tesla in Texas, shifting from Delaware, as a sign that Texas' new business court system is ready to rival Delaware's.

Earlier this year, Musk secretly funded a group that tried to oust Travis County District Attorney José Garza in the Democratic primary, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Musk was the main funder behind the group, Saving Austin, which spent over $650,000 on ads criticizing Garza's progressive policies.

Looks like Musk is serious about making Texas his new playground, and he's not afraid to stir things up. Buckle up, folks! It's going to be a wild ride.
