Selective Scramble: Kamala's Media Tour
Kamala Harris, who's been dodging the press like rain since her July campaign launch, has finally decided to dip her toes into the media pool. And what a cannonball it was! From tough questions on "60 Minutes" to chummy chats on "The View" and podcast "Call Her Daddy," Harris made the rounds. Here’s what she had to say, along with some fact-checks for good measure.
'60 Minutes'
Kamala started her week with a grilling from Bill Whitaker on "60 Minutes", where she fielded questions on immigration, Israel, and her flip-flopping on fracking. She claimed America has "historic low unemployment," which we rate Half True because unemployment has actually risen since 2022 for several groups.
She also bragged that the Biden-Harris team has "cut the flow of fentanyl by half," but offered no details. Whitaker even asked about her gun, to which she revealed she owns a Glock and got it during her law enforcement days.
'The View'
On Tuesday, Harris hit up "The View," where the hosts cooed over her anti-Trump rants and Biden praise. She claimed Trump wanted to "terminate the Constitution," which we rated True. When asked about doing something different from Biden, she initially drew a blank, eventually saying she’d appoint a Republican to the Cabinet.
'Call Her Daddy'
For the millennial crowd, Harris appeared on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. She focused on women’s issues, highlighting restrictive abortion laws post-Roe v. Wade. She claimed 1 in 3 U.S. women of reproductive age live in states with abortion bans, rated True. She also criticized Trump’s Supreme Court picks and his flip on abortion, although she left out that Trump's 2016 comment on punishing women was walked back the same day.
'The Howard Stern Show'
Harris chatted with shock jock-turned-Dem-pal Howard Stern, where they bonded over Prince and breakfast cereal. Harris repeated attacks on Trump, claiming he told people to put "bleach in their blood," which we rated Mostly False. Stern also let Harris air her grievances about the Supreme Court’s immunity decision for presidents, to which Harris slammed Trump’s dictator remark.
'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'
Finally, Harris made it to "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," where they chugged Miller High Life beers and bashed Trump. In what seems like damage control from "The View," she joked, "I’m obviously not Joe Biden. … But also, I’m not Donald Trump." Harris repeated her "60 Minutes" claim that teachers pay higher tax rates than billionaires, which we rated False.
So there you have it—a whirlwind media tour that was part confession booth, part spin room. Harris hit the airwaves hard, but whether her charm offensive will win over hearts (and votes) is a story for another day.
